Sever’s disease is a common cause of heel pain in growing children and adolescents, especially those who are active in sports. It occurs when the growth plate in the heel becomes inflamed due to repetitive stress and pressure. Risk factors include rapid growth spurts, participation in high impact activities, wearing poor footwear, and tight calf muscles. Symptoms often include heel pain that worsens with activity, swelling, tenderness, and limping. Causes are typically linked to overuse and strain on the developing heel bone. A podiatrist can help in diagnosing the condition, recommending rest, stretching, orthotics, and supportive shoes to relieve discomfort. If your child has persistent heel pain, it is suggested that you promptly consult a podiatrist who can provide effective relief and management solutions.

Sever’s Disease
Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.
Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.
Symptoms
Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.
Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Falls are a serious concern for older adults and often begin with issues in the feet and ankles. As people age, changes such as reduced sensation from peripheral nerve damage, stiffness in the joints, or weakened muscles can increase the likelihood of tripping or losing balance. Foot pain from conditions like arthritis, bunions, or deformities in the toes may also alter walking patterns, adding to the risk of falling. Wearing shoes that lack adequate support, such as flip-flops, can worsen instability. Even small problems like corns or thick toenails may affect how securely the feet grip the ground. Untreated injuries or swelling in the ankles can further decrease stability and reaction time during movement. A podiatrist can evaluate gait, check for underlying foot conditions, and recommend supportive footwear or orthotic devices to reduce fall risk. If you are a senior experiencing instability problems, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam and guidance on falls prevention.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.
How to Prevent Falls
Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:
Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

A bunion, also known as hallux valgus, is a deformity of the big toe joint that can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty walking. Surgery is sometimes chosen when conservative treatments no longer provide relief. For middle-aged and older adults, one important consideration is how the procedure may influence balance and gait. Research has shown that correcting the alignment of the big toe can improve stability, reduce pain, and restore more natural walking patterns. However, recovery requires time and rehabilitation, and some individuals may experience temporary weakness or changes in weight distribution. Wearing proper footwear, targeted exercises, and a gradual return to activity are key factors in regaining full function. Each patient’s outcome can vary depending on health, activity level, and severity of the deformity. If you are considering bunion surgery and have concerns about balance or gait, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist for personalized guidance and appropriate care.
